Log Home Restoration in Alta, WY: 4 Jobs, Honest Prices

Log home restoration in Alta happens on the quiet side of the Tetons. Alta is in Wyoming but reached through Teton Valley, Idaho, which puts it about fifteen minutes from our shop in Victor — and it sits high enough, close enough to Grand Targhee, that it takes more snow than the valley floor below it.

Log Care has worked both sides of the state line since 2008. Assessments in Alta are free and done on site.

What Alta does to a log home

More snow than the valley floor

Alta catches what comes over the top. Deeper snow means longer snow contact against walls and decks, and the bottom courses stay wet well into spring.

Big sun once the snow goes

The same elevation that brings the snow brings the UV. South and west walls here run through a finish faster than most owners expect, especially on darker stains.

Second homes and ski rentals

Many Alta log homes are used seasonally or rented. Decks, railings and entry logs wear ahead of the walls, and nobody is watching the finish in the months when it fails.

Access through Idaho

Alta is Wyoming, but everything reaches it through Teton Valley. That works in your favor on price — our shop is in Victor, so Alta is one of the shortest drives we make.

The four jobs a Alta log home needs

Media blasting · $3–$6 per sq ft

Strips failed stain, paint, mildew and gray UV-damaged fiber back to bare, bondable wood using recycled crushed glass, corn cob or walnut shell. New finish will not bond to gray fiber. Log home media blasting.

Log rot repair · $250 to $5,500

Priced by method, decided by a probe: borate treatment, epoxy consolidation, a Dutchman patch, half-log facing or a full log. Water is almost always the cause, so we fix the water too. Log home repair.

Staining and sealing · $1.40–$10 per sq ft

A breathable, penetrating stain goes on bare, sound wood within days of the blast, before UV can gray it again. Cost tracks prep, not paint. Log home staining.

Chinking and caulking · $12–$22 per linear ft

Failed material removed, joint prepped, backer rod installed, new chinking applied over a finished surface so it bonds. Done right it lasts twenty years or more. Chinking and caulking.

We also handle thermal imaging, log carpentry, house painting, pressure washing and window washing. Everything is on the services page.

Alta and the towns around it

Alta is served with Teton Valley — Driggs, Victor and Tetonia — and with Teton Village and Jackson over the pass. Every town is on the service areas page.

Log home restoration questions from Alta owners

How much does log home restoration cost in Alta?

Media blasting runs $3 to $6 per square foot of log surface, staining $1.40 to $10 per square foot depending on prep, a full re-chink $12 to $22 per linear foot, and rot repair from a $250 patch to $5,500 for a jacked sill log. Most whole-house projects land between $15,000 and $60,000. See log home restoration cost.

Do you charge more because Alta is in Wyoming?

No. Alta is reached through Teton Valley and our shop is in Victor, so it is one of the shortest drives we make. The assessment is free and the pricing is the same as anywhere else in our territory.

My place is a seasonal rental. When can you work?

Give us your blackout dates at the assessment. The constraint we cannot move is weather — blasting and staining need temperature and dry conditions, and at Alta elevation that window is shorter than it is down in the valley.

How often should an Alta log home be restained?

South and west walls every three to five years, north and east walls every five to eight. The quickest test is whether water still beads on the wall — when it soaks in, the repellent is spent. Blasting back to bare wood is typically needed every seven to ten years.
